Become a Medical Reserve Corps Volunteer
What Kind of Volunteers Does the MRC Need? The MRC is looking for:
- Licensed Medical Professionals
- Licensed Mental Health Professionals
- Non-Licensed Volunteers
What do BCHD MRC Volunteers Do?
The specific role(s) for each Medical Reserve Corps volunteer is determined by the volunteer’s background and skill level. All MRC volunteers work in coordination with existing local emergency response systems during large-scale emergencies such as earthquakes, floods, influenza epidemics and acts of terrorism. MRC volunteers offer education and prevention services to improve the health and well-being of their communities. They provide emergency preparedness workshops throughout the community to help residents better prepare for possible disasters. MRC volunteers with special skills and expertise are encouraged to share their knowledge with the community by providing public health workshops (e.g. tobacco cessation, substance abuse, domestic violence, SARS, West Nile Virus, etc.).
Is There a Special Role for Mental Health Volunteers?
Yes. Licensed Mental Health volunteers are encouraged to be a part of the MRC Mental Health Team. The mental health team is
available to the community during critical events that cause fear, anxiety, and out of the ordinary emotional reactions. The team is also available as an extension of the South Bay Youth Project to assist during crisis at the local schools.
What is the Process for Becoming a MRC Volunteer?
All volunteers (medical and mental health) must first complete the MRC
volunteer application. Once an application is reviewed and licenses are verified, the applicant will be notified to schedule a screening interview. Upon completion of the interview, references will be contacted and written notification will be sent to welcome the applicant to the MRC. Various trainings will be
available for MRC volunteers. Click
